  2. “The man who prays is the one who thinks that god has arranged matters all wrong, but who also thinks that he can instruct god how to put them right.”

    ― Christopher Hitchens

  3. God is a bloody creature, vicious and frightening, even the new testament stuff is quite grim, if lacking the previous brimstone. If anything Gods are responsible for too much bloodshed, without having ever lifted a finger or spoke a direct order Gods have had human blood shed for simply the sake of shedding blood for millenia. If anything, theres a connection between the faith and the killing, not the lack of faith, though I dont think that’s true either, Ive met plenty of people of faith who dont wield it like a knife or a bludgeon. Faith, or the lack of it, are always just excuses to be a shit or declare someone a shit.

  4. Considering almost all of the western world is less religious than the US, and has fewer shootings, the statistical argument is that faith in god is responsible for more shootings rather than less.

  5. As I understand the psychological profile of these shooters it’s clear that a lack of purpose is they key driver behind these shootings. So religion could help reduce the number of shootings by giving more people purpose, but I don’t think it’s a complete solution.

There’s a larger problem in American society where we only see value in family and the economy. So if you aren’t married, and aren’t economically successful, what is the point? This can happen even if a person has faith. In fact, religion can make the problem worse and radicalize people. This is a uniquely American problem. We need to help everyone feel like they have a purpose in American society.

  6. This is not an argument he wants to start. Europe is at record lows for church attendance and they have the tiniest fraction of our violence problem. We only have two things they don’t: guns, and religion.

  7. Four people you should never trust:

A religious leader who tells you how to vote

A politician who tells you how to pray

A draft dodger who tells you how to be patriotic

An illegitimate posotus not to believe your eyes or ears only what he says

By whoever, I’m not sure…but I added the last one for good measure
